How a hybrid geyser works
A hybrid geyser is built like a traditional gas storage geyser: an insulated steel tank, a gas burner underneath and a flue to carry exhaust out. It adds an electric heating element inside the tank with its own thermostat.
- Gas mode: the burner heats the whole tank quickly. This is the cheaper mode when you have pipeline gas.
- Electric mode: the element heats the tank when gas is off or too weak. It is slower and costs more per litre, but it works on any day.
- Both together: on some models you can run both to recover a cold tank faster before the morning rush.
Models marked AI (auto ignition) light the burner electronically, so you don't need to light a pilot flame by hand. That is safer and more convenient, especially when gas comes back on after a cut.
Why hybrids are popular in Pakistan
Researchers at LUMS have estimated that water heating can take around half of household gas use in winter, which is exactly when gas pressure is lowest. Many households in Punjab, KPK and Karachi get weak or no gas during morning peak hours.
A plain gas geyser leaves you with cold water on those days. A plain electric geyser works, but is expensive to run for a big family every day. A hybrid gives you the low running cost of gas on good days and the reliability of electricity on bad ones.

Which size do you need?
Gallon sizes here use the US gallon of about 3.8 litres, which is how most Pakistani sellers quote them.
- 25 gallons: three to four people, or two bathrooms with light use.
- 35 gallons: five to seven people, or two to three bathrooms.
- 55 gallons: joint families, big houses and three or more bathrooms used in the morning rush.

Running cost: gas mode vs electric mode
Heating water takes the same amount of energy whatever the fuel: about 1.16 watt-hours per litre per degree. Heating a full 35 gallon tank from 12°C to 55°C takes roughly 6.6 units (kWh) of heat.
In electric mode, that is about 6.6 units on your meter, which costs about Rs 250 at the 2026 NEPRA base rate for the 301 to 400 slab, before taxes. Do that daily and you add roughly 200 units a month. In gas mode, the same heat comes from pipeline gas, which is usually much cheaper per unit of heat.

Tips for getting the most from a hybrid geyser
- Heat on gas during good-pressure hours. If gas is strong late at night or mid-morning in your area, heat the tank then and let insulation carry it through.
- Use electric only to top up. Switch the element on for the last stretch before the morning rush rather than heating a cold tank from scratch.
- Set the thermostat to 50 to 55°C. Hotter water just loses more heat while it waits.

- Flush the tank before winter. Sediment from hard water slows heating in both modes.
